Prof. Dr. Matthias Mnich (BNITM) will talk about his SARS-CoV-2 research.

Many scientists in the Hamburg metropolitan area are involved in research related to SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic. In cooperation with the Helmholtz graduate school for Data Science in Hamburg (DASHH), the Leibniz ScienceCampus InterACt wants to increase the visibility of this research fostering new contacts and potential collaborations. Therefore, the new online Hamburg COVID-19 lecture series started on August 12th.

The series represents unique platform for vivid exchange and takes place every two weeks with a 30-minute lecture and room for further discussions afterwards.

On Wednesday, December 2, at 1 pm Prof. Dr. Matthias Mnich (Institute for Algorithms and Complexity, TUHH) will present and explain his COVID-19 research in his talk entitled "Algorithms, network epidemiology, contact tracing".

Abstract

Network epidemiology is a discipline to model the spread of epidemic diseases in population models. To apply this methodology to the current Corona pandemic, several challenges must be overcome, for which we propose an algorithmic approach. Our algorithms help to quickly identify superspreaders in populations, measure the effectiveness of quarantine, and support efficient contact tracing. Beyond, we also discuss how algorithms from mathematical optimization can provide decision support to mitigate the effects of the current pandemic: this includes efficient testing strategies and distribution of COVID-19 patients to intensive-care units.
